Elk Hunt

Earlier this week I had planned on going up to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to do some leaf peeping. I had been checking reports and forecasts, and this was the closest I could guess to being the peak of the leaf change. Well, either the forecast was wrong or the colors this year just weren’t as amazing as previous visits.

Fortunately leaves aren’t the only thing to photograph in Cataloochee. I got up at 5 a.m. and made the 45 minute drive in to the park and was happy to find the herd of elk in a dark fog about 45 minutes before sunrise. I’ve seen that scene before, but it never gets old.
