An Elizabeth City woman took on lookers and police by surprise when she made good on her threat to jump into the Pasquotank River and then fought officers' attempts to rescue her. After a nearly 20-minute struggle (left) with officers John Avery and James Henning, Debroah Holt Smith was finally pulled from the 57-degree water. Still struggling when she reached shore, Smith (right) was arrested and charged with resist, obstruct and delay and with violating an ordinance that bans swimming near city-owned property. Avery and fellow officer Tami Williams take Smith into custody.
